American physician who co-founded the Menninger Foundation with his father, Charles Frederick Menninger and younger brother. They were the pioneers of 20th century psychiatry. They established the foundation to bring together not only the practice of psychiatry, but also education, training and research. Their approach emphasizes the use of a humane social environment for hospitalized patients as an important part of therapy. Karl believes that most crime is a stage of mental or emotional illness that requires such treatment and that imprisonment without treatment is futile to correct antisocial behavior.
