• The Australian pathologist, together with Ernst Boris Chain, has studied, isolated and purified penicillin for general clinical use.
• He worked with Chain on natural antibacterial substances produced by microorganisms, leading to the isolation, purification and chemical structure determination of penicillin.
• They shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Sir Alexander Fleming, who discovered the antibiotic penicillin in 1928.
