Swiss microbiologist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1978. All three were cited for their work in molecular genetics, specifically for the discovery and application of restriction enzymes that break down giant deoxyribonucleic acid molecules into manageable pieces, small enough to be separate for individual study, but large enough to retain pieces of their own genetic information in the order of the units that make up the original substance.
