An American biologist originally from Germany known for his work in the field of avian taxonomy, population genetics and evolution. In 1928, he led the first of three expeditions to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, where he studied the effects of geographical distribution among different animal species. He led the development of modern synthetic evolutionary theory. As a young boy, he began to observe birds, and at the age of ten he recognized all local bird species by calling and sight.
