Born July 16, 1904; died March 5, 1974 at the age of 69.
Black-American biochemist and university president who first synthesized the essential amino acid threonine. Although best known for his studies of amino acids, he has conducted research in a wider field, including the biochemistry of various bacilli, B vitamins and antibiotics. He was afflicted and often hospitalized with severe asthma, which contributed to his death.
