Born on July 27, 1881; died on March 31, 1945 at the age of 63.
German biochemist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1930 for his work on the structure of haemin, red blood cell pigment and chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants and especially because he synthesized haemin, the non-protein part of hemoglobin that gives blood its red color. He also showed that chlorophyll is a porphyrin and that they are structurally similar to haemin, but with slight differences.
