American biochemist who, along with John E. Walker, received half of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work explaining the enzymatic process involved in the production of the energy storage molecule adenosine triphosphate, which fuels the metabolic process in cells of all living things and how the ATP synthase enzyme catalyzes the formation of ATP. Boyer and his colleagues proposed, based on biochemical data, a mechanism for the formation of ATP from adenosine diphosphate and inorganic phosphate.
