Dr. Denton A Cooley is an American surgeon and heart transplant pioneer, the first person to transplant an artificial heart into a person. In 1960, he performed a sophisticated operation on the hearts of infants with congenital heart disease, and was the first surgeon to successfully remove a pulmonary embolism. On April 4, 1969, because there was no donor heart for a 47-year-old dying patient with diseased heart muscle, he implanted a mechanical heart made of silicone as a temporary measure.
