Born August 24, 1898; died May 22, 1983 at the age of 84.
A Belgian-American cytologist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974 for discoveries concerning the structural and functional organization of a cell. Claude was able to separate the various organelles in the nucleus of a living cell using cell fractionation methods he developed using a high-performance centrifuge. Since 1942, he has used electron microscopy to further elucidate the structure of cells.
