• Hungarian-American biochemist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1937 for his discoveries concerning biological combustion processes, with particular reference to vitamin C and fumaric acid catalyst.
• He isolated vitamin C, noted its value in preventing scurvy, and extracted a quantity of vitamin C from Hungarian paprika.
• In 1938, he began to study muscles and quickly discovered the proteins actin and myosin and their complexes.
