Born 3 Dec 1895; died 9 Oct 1982 at age 86.
Sigmund Freud’s daughter, Austrian psychoanalyst. As the founder of Children’s Psychoanalysis, she was one of the leading practitioners. She also made a fundamental contribution to understanding how the ego and consciousness work to protect oneself from painful thoughts, urges and emotions. Although important in itself, she differs from her father in that she emphasizes the role of her ego in her psychological function (rather than id power). Her book, Ego and Defense Mechanisms (1936), laid the foundation for ego psychology. She was one of the first psychoanalysts to work primarily with children.
