Arnold Lucius Gesell was an American psychologist and pediatrician who pioneered the use of motion picture cameras to study the physical and mental development of normal babies and children. His books gave norms for behavior in successive stages of development and were widely read by parents. Gesell’s first study focused on children with developmental disabilities, but believed that understanding normal infant and child development was necessary to understand abnormality.
