- Crawford Williamson Long was an American physician who was the first in the U.S. to use ether as anesthetic in surgery.
- On 30 Mar 1842, practicing in rural Georgia, he first used ether anesthetic while he removed a tumour from a patient’s neck.
- Although he operated more times with ether before 1846, he was apparently unaware of its full significance and did not publish a description of his procedure until 1849.
