American pathologist whose substantial research into the treatment of goiter with iodine led to the use of table salt iodization. Between 1917 and 22, he conducted a trial on a large group of schoolgirls to demonstrate that an iodine supplement significantly reduced goiter. Dr. David. M. Cowie promoted the production of iodized table salt, which was first sold on May 1, 1924, and then throughout the United States, greatly reducing the incidence of goiter.
