American pioneer of US medical education, general surgeon of the Continental armies during the US War of Independence and the founder of Philadelphia College, the first medical school of the United States, in 1765. The American Revolution had begun, and Congress appointed him as the medical director of hospitals and chief physician of the colonial army. Morgan insisted on such high standards and reforms in the medical department that his subordinates rebelled and dismissed him.
