Drell Marston Bates was an American zoologist and writer who studied mosquitoes and tropical diseases for the Rockefeller Foundation with fieldwork in Albania, Egypt and Colombia. Rockefeller scientists have reduced the problem of yellow fever in Colombia, where Bates oversaw researchers who worked with local doctors on diagnosis and treatment, studied forests and swamps in the area, and tested insects suspected of carrying diseases. As an environmental activist, he believed that the government should also respect the Earth’s environment.
