Medical Genetics syllabus in China
- Medical Genetics focuses on the study of genetic mechanisms and the developmental
formation of genetic disease at both the cellular and molecular levels.
- The aim of this course is to make sure that medical students master the basic principles of genetics.
- Medical Genetics is one of the fast-developing subjects in medicine and is a compulsory course for medical students.
Course Description:
- The topics emphasize basic theory and practical knowledge.
- The contents of this course include the cellular and molecular basis of genetics, basic laws of genetics, single-gene disorders, polygenic disorders, inborn errors of metabolism and molecular disease, chromosomal disease, population genetics, birth defects and congenital malformation, cancer genetics and clinical genetics.
- After the study of genetics, the medical students are well acquainted with the knowledge of genetics and will enable them to become a qualified clinical physicians in the future.
- The course will provide a solid foundation for studying other basic and clinical courses.
Teaching methods
- Lectures: interactive classroom lectures to facilitate the learning of terminology, principles, and concepts
- Teacher-directed learning (problem-based):
- The problems are proposed by teachers according to the teaching contents.
- The students give presentations after searching for materials relevant to the problems from reference books and the internet.
- In the end, the teachers summarize and solve the problems.
- Self-directed learning: problem-based small group discussions, question-answer sessions, revision and reinforcement of important concepts, and suggestions of books and resource material.
