Psychiatry syllabus in China
- Psychiatry is an important branch of clinical medicine. As the bio-psycho-social medical model took the place of the biomedical model, mental health has been paying it more attention.
Course Description:
- Psychiatry is a science of studying the etiology, pathology, manifestation, prognosis, treatment and prevention of psychosis and other mental disorders.
- The lessons are given to introduce different mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, mood disorder, dementia, alcoholism, drug abuse, anxiety disorders and hysteria, stress-related disorder, personality disorder, psychiatric disorders of childhood and adolescence and so on.
- Besides theory lessons, the important branch of this clinical medical science is the clinical course at the hospital where there is extensive contact with patients. After completing this subject, students should understand the basic theory of some important mental disorders and their treatments.
Teaching methods
- This subject includes 54 hours of lectures and 18 hours of probation.
- Teacher gives lectures with PPT assistant for knowledge teaching.

- In different parts, introduce different methods to give lectures.
- In the Symptoms part, an assistant with a video, made by our department;
- In the introduction part, an assistant with SEBL (self experiencing based learning), in order to well understand the importance of psychosocial factors;
- In other chapters, an assistant with problem-based learning (PBL), discussion, and an analysis of each disease, to help students to understand the basic knowledge about clinical characters, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of each disease.
- Students visit the hospital on probation, combined with clinical observation, and discussion.
- The faculty gives a topic, students read references, examine patients, and give a report, then other students add supplementary information and the teacher gives a review.
- The faculty Teache also gives case discussion to test students after they finish probation in each department.

Examination pattern & marks distribution
- Knowledge: 100 Marks, final term exam account for 70%, others including writing review, analyzing cases, independent study, and attendance account for 5%.
- Probation: 100 Marks, the ability to operate accounts for 70%, including collecting patient’s illness history, physical and mental exam. Written exam accounts for 30%.
