- Americanpioneer in the medical education of women who founded the Boston Female Medical School (Nov 1848).
- Firstmedical school in the world exclusively for women, because he disapproved of “male midwives.” Opened with 12 students, its early curriculum focused on midwifery.
- In 1850, renamed the New England Female Medical College, expanded to include a full medical curriculum, and the college began to grant medical degrees to women.
