American physician, physician, virologist and epidemiologist who was the first in the United States to isolate the influenza A virus and showed that there are other strains, such as influenza B. Francis has developed a versatile vaccine effective against both strains and conducted research that led to the development of antisera for the treatment of pneumonia. The trials were unprecedented in scope and scale, involving approximately 1.8 million children from the United States, Canada and Finland.
