• American surgeon who founded America’s first surgical school. In 1884, he was the first to describe the injection of cocaine into sensory nerve trunks to block pain transmission.
• Since 1886, he was involved in research at a newly established pathology laboratory in Baltimore, Md., where he developed rigorous aseptic surgical techniques with fine silk sutures in small stitches. and careful tissue handling results in safer, more effective results.
